Discovery STEM Education is a not for profit organisation with a mission to inspire and support the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. This is achieved through a variety of projects including the Surgical Skills Day.

Surgical Skills Day

Practical exposure to operative surgery using fresh tissue and surgical tools to exercise hand-eye co-ordination. Aimed at A-level students with an interest in medical related careers. Students gain a realistic understanding of the level of accuracy and concentration required in open surgery through a number of operative exercises including:

  • Surgical knot-tying and instrument handling.
  • Suturing
  • Dissection
  • Anastomosis

Delivered by a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Each student will construct a photographic portfolio of their work and receive a certificate.

Subjects: Physics, General Science, Chemistry, Biology

Running time: 4-8 hrs

Ages 16-19yrs old

Cost: £500 for 12 students to take part in the full day or for 2 x 3 hour workshops (12 students in each). All resources and equipment will be provided.
